The Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre has contracted one of the most experienced general managers in the business to guide its opening from design, marketing and operation perspectives. Within a fortnight of taking up his position, Mr Peter Brokenshire was at work on the Western Australian stand at AIME introducing the centre's plans to potential clients. Regarded as one of the most "hands-on" of general managers, Mr Brokenshire held senior executive positions during the pre-opening and operations of convention centres in Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Kuala Lumpur and Durban. It was at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban, South Africa's first, that he faced some of the biggest challenges of his career. In his three years there, the ICC evolved into a convention centre with world class capability. Mr Brokenshire said he will be marketing Perth's new centre, due to open in 2004 to the growing meetings business out of Asia, especially Singapore and Malaysia.
