Aldi unveils high-concept Christmas ad campaign

AUSTRALIA - The frosty residents of a frigid northern-hemisphere town warm up to Aussie Christmas traditions in a campaign for grocery store chain Aldi.

Client: Aldi

Agency: BMF

Market: Australia

Campaign scope: TV (main spot above, three offer-specific followups below), outdoor, radio, catalogue, digital, social, print and POS. The campaign launched Sunday.

Press release quote: Alex Booker, BMF creative director: "Like any Aussie kid, I’ve grown up feeling our Christmas was inferior to that of our Northern Hemisphere brethren with their trademark white Christmas. It’s time we showed them what it’s like to have an Aussie Christmas and prove that it might just be the perfect way to celebrate Christmas.”

Comments: We commend the agency and client for trying to build on a successful previous campaign that featured surfing santas. But compared to that jolly old effort, this tries a bit too hard and therfore leaves us a bit cold. Maybe we're just not in the Christmas spirit yet?
