Youku trials 3G mobile site

BEIJING - Chinese online video site Youku will beta-launch a 3G mobile site that focuses on user-generated content, music, sport, humour and current events on 17 May in time for World Telecommunications Day.

According to the company, the launch highlights Youku’s strategy for 3G mobile video and was developed through partnerships with mobile video content licensees, mobile carriers and handset makers.

The interactive 3G website was built by Youku and Beijing Telecom.

Among its partners are Shanghai Media Group's Dragon New Media, with which Youku will build a mobile video syndication platform for traditional media content, and content licensees China Radio International and China National Radio. Youku has also been in talks with international and domestic handset makers to develop video applications for clients.

"2006 was the year that PC-based internet video really gained traction in China, and we believe 2010 will be the year that mobile internet video will take off here," said the company’s CEO Victor Koo (pictured).

Separately, 17 May is the day China Unicom, one of the market’s three 3G-network providers, plans to launch its 3G platform.
