Youku, Taobao team for retail video gallery

BEIJING - Chinese video website Youku.com has partnered with e-commerce site Taobao.com to provide a video gallery for digital retailers.

The service utilises Youku’s video technology to give merchants the opportunity to more comprehensively showcase a number of their products in a in their online stores via an embedded video player.

According to Youku, the two companies will share the profits from the service and Youku will further promote its video site on Taobao.com.

Youku's CFO Dele Liu said the service would be mainly geared towards FMCG merchants.

"Fast-moving consumer goods comprise a large proportion of products on Taobao,” he said in a release. “Most FMCG consumers match the demographic profile of Youku users well. Eighty-two per cent of Youku's users are between 18 and 40. Youku's advertisers will naturally love users for whom online shopping is an essential part of daily life.”

According to reports, the service is slated to go live on 25 June.
