Yoga Journal taps into popular movement

Yoga Asia Media has acquired the licence to publish Yoga Journal in Hong Kong and Thailand.

The launch of what is believed to be the region's first yoga title comes as the practice of yoga becomes more mainstream in Asia.

"Yoga is going upmarket here and you see even hotels such as the Mandarin hiring its first resident yoga expert," said Yoga Asia Media general manager, Grace Lee.

Industry estimates show that there are more than 200,000 practioners in Hong Kong alone, she added.

The US edition of the title, which has seen paid circulation grow from 90,000 to 325,000 with a readership of one million following the publication's buyout by former investment banker John Abbott, will publish its first Hong Kong edition in November/ December.

According to Yoga Asia Media publisher Nigel Oakins, the title will be distributed at yoga and health studios, as well as on newsstands. The magazine will be published in English and Chinese-language and will feature content from the US edition as well as local features and news. The title will target advertisers seeking to reach the female segment.

A full-page ad is priced at HK$22,000 (US$2,800).
