Yahoo lays off 1,500

ASIA-PACIFIC - Yahoo has begun laying off employees worldwide, including in Asia-Pacific, less than two months after announcing it would reduce its international workforce by 10 per cent, and said it will close down offices in the region.

According to Yahoo spokespeople in the region, Yahoo employees from both North Asia and Southeast Asia affected by the decision have been notified.

Yahoo representatives could not confirm how many regional employees have been laid off, but Yahoo’s global tally is 1,500 people and has not ruled out more in the future.

Yet, a spokeswoman from Yahoo,s Hong Kong subsidiary noted that, while the office would lay off staff, it would not be at the rate seen across the globe. "We are reducing our global workforce by 10 percent by the end of this year and Yahoo! Hong Kong's impacted employees is relatively below 10 per cent."

Yahoo further announced it will close smaller, undisclosed offices in Asia next year, as well as the United States. It will also shut down offices in Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Oslo and Stockholm.

The decision was prompted by disappointing third-quarter results, which included a 64 per cent plunge in profits.

“Globally, Yahoo has issued layoffs, and that includes each region and in Asia Pacific,” a Yahoo Southeast Asia spokesman said. “All the offices know already.”

Yahoo’s headquarters in Southeast Asia is based in Singapore and its head office in North Asia is located in Taipei.
