Yahoo calls for US courts to reject lawsuit

OAKLAND - Yahoo has asked a US court to dismiss a lawsuit brought against it by civil rights advocates in April, which alleges China-based writers and dissidents have been arrested, jailed and tortured as a result of the internet company providing information to the China authorities.

The World Organization for Human Rights has filed the suit on behalf of several online writes and reporters.

Yahoo, which has not disputed turning over the information, claims there is little evidence the turning over of the information and the arrests were connected, and in addition, maintains it is acting in accordance with the law in China.

The filing, which outlines several reasons as to why the case should be thrown out, reportedly focuses on a central claim that US courts have no jurisdiction over China laws. At Media’s presstime, Yahoo had not responded to requests for comment.
