Yahoo backs bid to bolster spend for the internet

Yahoo has set aside over half of its Hong Kong marketing budget to fund an educational programme promoting the internet as an advertising medium to local marketers.

The web portal has lined up three seminars this year under the theme of 'Media Evolution', hoping to convey the idea that media spending hasn't kept pace with changes in media habits. Invites have been sent to 6,000 people in Hong Kong.

"The main purpose of these seminars is to educate people to go online," said Yahoo Hong Kong's head of sales, Ivy Wong. "As Yahoo Hong Kong is already the market leader we just want to expand the pie."

The internet currently attracts less than two per cent of total adspend in Hong Kong, Wong added. Yahoo has been running annual seminars for six years, introducing a common theme for the year's talks for the first time last year.
