WSJ plans Indonesian news site, mobile reader in Bahasa

JAKARTA – The Wall Street Journal is to launch a dedicated Indonesian news site and mobile newsreader in Bahasa this summer.

WSJ gears up to launch an Indonesian news site and mobile reader

The website and mobile reader will deliver news and analysis from The Wall Street Journal to readers in Indonesia, one of the world's largest democracies and fastest-growing economies.

The online and mobile content for Indonesia will include coverage of business and finance, in addition to a selection of translated articles from The Wall Street Journal’s global editions.

The Bahasa mobile reader will be BlackBerry compatible, tapping into more than 10 million users in Indonesia.

Robert Thomson, editor-in-chief of Dow Jones and managing editor of The Wall Street Journal, said Indonesia's economic and democratic transformation has become a model for the developing world.

He said, “The country's global role grows with each passing day, so the world must be better informed about Indonesia and Indonesia needs more news and analysis about influential international events.”

Last week, Dow Jones announced that Almar Latour has been appointed editor-in-chief for Dow Jones Newswires in Asia, in addition to his responsibilities as editor-in-chief, Asia, of The Wall Street Journal, a position he has held since 2009.

The company is making Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal a single news operation with "common focus on delivering reliable, differentiated news and analysis on the world and the world of business". Latour will lead efforts to further strengthen editorial coverage and expand through digital, local-language and other initiatives, the company said.
