Work commences at US$3.4 billion Resorts World on Sentosa Island

SINGAPORE A groundbreaking ceremony at Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS), Singapore's second integrated resort, on April 16, signalled the beginning of one of the largest construction projects ever undertaken in Singapore.

The US$3.4 billion RWS is located near the old Sentosa ferry terminal, which is being demolished to make way for the sprawling complex.RWS, including meeting and convention facilities, will open in stages from the first quarter of 2010.Upon completion, parent company Genting International expects RWS to welcome 15 million visitors – tourists and locals – and generate US$9.5 billion in tourism receipts.
Group chairman Lim Kok Thay assured the tourism industry that the many attractions would be delivered according to plan.He announced that multiaward- winning designer Jeremy Railton would design and create four unique attractions combining sight, music, lighting, projection and the latest technological innovations to deliver multiple ‘sensory high points’ for visitors.Using projected images and lighting effects, LED screens at the maritime museum will createa wall of illusion.At the FestiveWalk, a digital theatre will entertain guests day and night under a giant gazeboand band shells, with a night-time digital show of imagery and sound effects.There will also be a multiple-use stage for visiting performers and corporate events.“In three years’ time, Singaporeans and visitors will be able to come here for fun, entertainment and edutainment.“Sentosa will have a renewed focus as an island that offers a whole range of great experiences and exciting escapades,” said Lim.
