Weber to defend bumper Microsoft account

GLOBAL - Microsoft has put its US$4m global mobile PR business up for review, putting four-year incumbent Weber Shandwick on alert.

Sources involved in the review told PRWeek that the pitch document was released earlier this week. Weber Shandwick is expected to defend the brief against competition from the global software giant's other roster shops - Edelman and Waggener Edstrom.

Microsoft's mobile communications business covers its offering across a range of devices. Its most popular platform is Windows Mobile, which is present on several smartphone brands. However, a source pointed out that the company has been unimpressed by its comms efforts for Windows Mobile, in comparison to Google's Android operating system, and other competitors like the Apple iPhone and Blackberry. It is also believed that the establishment of a new unit overseeing consumer and online over the past year has caused other Microsoft business groups to reassess their comms needs.
