WEB BRIEFINGS: New service strives to eliminate spam

A new, free Internet privacy service allows email users to

subscribe and participate in online discussions and services without

making themselves vulnerable to junk mail.

Launched by Mailshell, the service gives users the address

nojunk@mailshell.com to use when signing up for email or Web

services.

The company then creates a new, private and disposable proxy email

address called a mail shell, which basically serves to keep a user's

real address anonymous.

As every email address is unique to each subscription, tracking and

throttling the source of spam in the future is made easier.

Further, the company said the address could be set to expire

automatically at a set date.

Mailshell said it would promote the new technology to make it available

through open-source code.

"Users can unsubscribe easily. Mailshell's advanced filtering technology

is able to automatically and accurately identify and categorise incoming

emails. If users do not like what they are receiving, Mailshell will

stop it instantly and permanently. Users are more organised, have more

control and are more productive," the company said.
