Wall Street Journal Asia redesigns print title

ASIA-PACIFIC - The Wall Street Journal Asia has undergone its first major print redesign since the publication's change to compact format in October 2005, today launching a paper with a simplified front page and a more focused business and finance section.

According to the paper’s editor-in-chief Almar Latour, the paper was remodelled to provide an easier way of reading news, moving its popular ‘What’s News’ section from the front page to page two in an extended format. The front page instead features a more prominent masthead, more readable navigation bars and enhanced stock-market listings at the top of the page.

Elsewhere in the paper, the Journal has launched a Business & Finance section that merges the former Money & Investing and Corporate News sections in an effort to print more in-depth markets coverage and statistical analysis, which Latour said is the backbone of the paper. He added that the Journal has also placed greater emphasis on its Technology section, expanding it through the gadget-focused column Tech Bazaar.

Latour said the redesigned Journal also reflects print’s growing relationship with online. Wall Street Journal Asia will now feature a weekly column of select content from the Journal’s recently launched digital domain, the China Real Time Report.

According to Latour, the Wall Street Journal’s European edition will also undergo a localised redesign.

The redesign project, which began with Latour’s appointment in August, comes during a busy year for the Journal in Asia. Aside from its launch of China Real Time Report, which replaced its China Journal Blog, the publication additionally launched a Japanese-language site and extended its reach in India.
