After delays to its initial launch, Australia's newest domestic airline, Virgin Blue, took to the skies on August 31.

Backed by billionaire Mr Richard Branson, the Brisbane-based carrier is aiming to shake up a market dominated by Qantas and Ansett Australia. Initially, the airline will fly two routes - Brisbane to Sydney and Melbourne.

Virgin Blue head of commercial Mr David Huttner said the airline is an option for the conference market. "Our first sold-out flight is for a Melbourne convention in October," he said.
