There are an estimated 75 million mobile subscribers in Vietnam, accounting for 85 per cent of the total population. However, handset penetration stands at 115 per cent as many Vietnamese own multiple phones.
Vinaphone counts 16 million subscribers and trails MobiFone (22 million) and Viettel, which corners 37 per cent of the market.
Vinaphone is looking to roll out its 3G service this year. It will bring in up to VND 20 trillion (US$1.1 billion) in turnover, according to local reports.
The Vinaphone appointment caps a good run of new business wins for Grey Vietnam, which was also awarded the Samsung Touch Mobile business, a project for Carlsberg and the entire Bayer Pharmaceutical Rx business in recent times.
The WPP firm had also picked up the entire corporate business of leading Singaporean life insurer, Great Eastern Life, in Vietnam following a four-way pitch.
