US veteran to lead HK Disneyland marketing

Hong Kong Disneyland has rejected industry speculation that incoming marketing chief Jill Estorino faces a struggle coming to grips with the local market nuances of Hong Kong and China.

Estorino, who will take up her new role as senior vice-president for marketing next month, is a 15-year veteran with Walt Disney Company in the US. Most recently, she was responsible for leading the marketing drive for Walt Disney World.

Estorino's appointment comes nearly 12 months after incumbent marketing chief Roy Tan Hardy and several other mid-ranking marketing and communications executives departed the theme park, reportedly unhappy with the park's strategic direction and excessive control from the US.

Industry sources have confirmed to Media that during the year-long search for a new locally-sourced marketing head, several candidates dropped out during the final stages, raising questions over the company's ability to fill the role.

However, Hong Kong Disneyland chief Bill Ernst said Estorino would be a welcome addition to the operation.

"There are plans to recruit to the organisation people with local and regional experience to enhance our business development in this part of the world," Ernst told Media.

"Jill possesses a wealth of park and resort business experience. (She brings) additional expertise to the team with an emphasis on extensive knowledge of the mainland China and Hong Kong markets, which will be instrumental in bringing the company to new heights."

The appointment comes as Hong Kong Disneyland recently revealed it was ramping its attractions in a bid to boost visitor numbers.

Ernst also confirmed that the theme part would increase its advertising activities throughout the year in a bid to attract more customers from China.

Since its 2005 launch, the park has faced numerous public relations challenges.
