Universal McCann scoops $15 million Telekom Malaysia account

KUALA LUMPUR - Telekom Malaysia (TM) the country's largest telecommunications company, has handed its US$15 million media planning and buying business to Mediabrands' Universal McCann (UM), toppling five-year incumbent Zenith Media following a two-way pitch. UM has been awarded the business for a two-and-a-half year period.

Kumar Prashant, CEO of Universal McCann Malaysia, confirmed the win, describing it as "a resounding validation” of UM’s offer.

The victory for UM comes close on the heels of winning the US$5 million Dutch Lady business, which it snapped from incumbent Zenith Media last month.

Zenith Media will continue to handle TM International (TMI) brands, which split from TM last year, including mobile service brand Celcom. In October, TMI handed its creative account to M&C Saatchi after a five-way pitch.

Muhaimi Mustapha, business director for the TM account at Zenith Media Malaysia, said: “We knew there would be some changes with the recent decoupling of TMI from TM. TMI and TM are two entirely separate companies today with different corporate and business objectives. Some of the products and services of both companies are in competition with each other. We wish TM the very best for the future."

As an integrated telecommunications player, TM offers a comprehensive range of communication services and solutions in fixed line, data, mobile and Internet, and multimedia.
