Universal McCann bolsters position with MetLife, Clark

Universal McCann Beijing has added two more clients to its list, after prevailing in competitive pitches which took place before the Lunar New Year.

MetLife Insurance has signed with the agency after moving from the incumbent Mediacom, although the exact brief will not be decided until the end of this month.

Managing director Kain Huang said MetLife Insurance was facing strong competition from both local and international firms as the market had opened up.

'This is the second year (the client) has a campaign in China and it will grow market by market," he said. "With the level of penetration of personal insurance, there is definitely a good opportunity, but competition will be quite strong. That is the major challenge."

Clark Shoes has also signed with the agency, after a quiet year with very little action for the brand. Huang said the latest account wins show Universal McCann is pushing ahead with plans to expand its business in the Greater China region.

"The two will definitely be an added strength for the Beijing office," said Huang.

The agency has also hired three new executives for the Beijing and Shanghai offices, including Mike North, who has been appointed general manager of Beijing. See page 12.
