It is thought that a Sarft injunction has been sent out to print and TV media to pull the ad, following widespread government disapproval with the movie, both for its explicit sex scenes and for its portrayal of “traitors” in a positive light.
However, the TVC is still believed to be running on some TV stations. “The advertisement itself was produced and distributed in accordance with Chinese rules and regulations and government approval was received before distributing and airing it,” said a Unilever spokesperson.
“We have not received any official notice for the ban and are currently trying to ascertain what lies at the root of the issue, before working with the relevant authorities to resolve the matter to the satisfaction of all.”
Unilever is standing by its assailed star, stating that, “the Pond’s contract with Tang Wei remains intact.” It is believed that the contract is worth Rmb 6 million (US$830,000).
