Twitter acquires mobile messaging business

LONDON - Twitter has acquired mobile messaging business Cloudhopper for an undisclosed sum, as part of ambitious plans to boost its SMS service across the world.

Twitter aquires Cloudhopper
The micro-blogging site has worked with Cloudhopper over the past eight months as it has sought to grow and scale its SMS service and connect directly to mobile networks globally.

Twitter claims it has developed one of the highest volume SMS programmes in the world, processing close to a billion SMS tweets a month across countries including the UK, US, Australia and Indonesia.

The acquisition will see Cloudhopper's founder Joe Lauer and director of carrier integration Kristin Kanaar join the Twitter mobile team.

It follows quickly after the acquisition of iPhone Twitter app Tweetie and the launch of long-awaited advertising platform, Promoted Tweets.

The micro-blogging site's new ad model will allow advertisers using Promoted Tweets to have their ads displayed at the top of some Twitter.com search results pages.

The site has now got up to 105 million registered users.
