“We’re not yet clear on how management of The Star would reposition The Sun and whether its editorial direction might change,” she said.
Kamat added that media agencies are unlikely to be affected by the move, but noted that the newspapers may look to offer bundled rates for advertisers.
Esther Chan, media services director of Carat Malaysia, commented: "The Star has the financial clout (to acquire The Sun) and the Sun looks like ripe for the picking. It’s doing well in terms of its revenue and editorial. But for the readers, it’s bad news because we’ll have one less source of stories.”
The news followed the recent acquisition of a majority stake in The Sun by Vincent Tan, the daily’s owner.
