The Economist makes India appointment

MUMBAI - The Economist has appointed former Lintas Personal president Suprio Guha Thakurta as associate publisher as part of an investment plan to boost its India circulation from 17,000 to 50,000 over the next three years.

As leader of the publication’s new drive in India, Thakurta’s chief task will be to increase circulation and advertising sales, which will be run in conjunction with Business India.

The Economist aims to capitalise on the increasing number of Indian companies now looking for a means to reach an influential audience to build their brands both domestically and internationally.

The Economist has a readership of 368,000 in the Asia Pacific Region, and is seeing a steady rise in circulation, which has increased by 72 per cent over the past decade.

The brand’s first integrated marketing campaign in India, currently being developed with Ogilvy and Mindshare, is designed to raise awareness among potential readers, advertising and media agencies and is due for release in February 2008.
