Ten tips for incentive groups visiting Phuket

From elephant trekking and tropical marine life to traditional spicy cuisine, Thai massages and cultural shows.

1 Ride an elephant along a mountain-top trail and jungle in Khoa Suk. There is only
one company in Phuket to use – Siam Safari. Lunch is provided and groups can sleep in
a jungle-style resort.

2 Take a late afternoon drive along the cliffs between Kata and Rawai Beach on the southern tip of Phuket Island. Groups can enjoy the sunset with an ice-cold drink at Promthep Cape.

3 Relax tired muscles with a traditional Thai massage. There are hundreds of Thai masseuse parlours to choose from, but Diethelm Events recommends groups try Sukko Spa near Chalong Bay. The spa can accommodate up to 120 people at the same time.

4 Visit the Patong markets. There is a selection of local products including clothes, handicrafts, souvenirs, painting, antique items, accessories, leather goods, household gadgets and CDs. The major night market in Patong is on the beach road and a second is on Rat-U-Thit Road.

5 Marvel at the tropical marine life during a snorkelling trip. Two sets of islands, the Similans and Surins – about 95km north of Phuket – are favourites because of their plentiful and mostly intact coral formations and superb diversity of marine life with visibility of up to 30 metres.

6 Prepare to sweat from the fiery heat of Thai chilli after a bowl of tom yam goong.
You can find local varieties of the dish at Patong’s fresh food markets, but Ba Rim Pa serves the best on the whole of Phuket.

7 Visit the local branch of Gems Gallery – the world’s biggest jewellry store. Groups will enter a sparkling world of gems and silks.
Visitors will find an extensive collection of quality gems and world-class jewellery.

8 Cultural shows featuring skilled Thai dance from the different regions of the country, martial arts demonstrations, elephant rides and Thai dinners are all brought together at Phuket’s original cultural garden. There is also an attached orchid farm.

9 Spend an evening at Simon Cabaret and enjoy the boys that would be girls. The performers, the infamous ‘lady boys’ of Patong Beach, have charisma to spare. Expect camp classics such as Big Spender and even a little Céline Dion at this wholesome drag cabaret for the whole family.

10 What does the future have in store? Visit Wat Chalong and have your fortune told by shaking the ‘Sim See’ sticks.
At the temple stands a statue of Luang Por Cham, who helped put down the Chinese
Coolie Rebellion in 1876.
