Ten bags Kirch's World Cup rights for India airing

NEW DELHI: Dubai-based satcaster Ten (Taj Entertainment Network) Sports has bagged the Indian cable, satellite and terrestrial rights for the next two World Cup finals.

Taj Television - a 24-hour satcaster which was launched in April last year - edged out ESPN Star Sports and Sony Entertainment Television for the contract from the ailing KirchMedia, which holds the worldwide rights for 2002 and 2006. Taj is now negotiating with state-owned Doordashaan for the deferred telecast of matches to terrestrial audiences in India.

"Ten Sports will capture every bit of the excitement and euphoria synonymous with World Cup soccer, said Chris McDonald, Taj chief executive officer.

The channel is hoping that it will be exposed to more than 20 million homes during the upcoming World Cup.
