Telkomsel selects Leo Burnett and MEC

JAKARTA - Telkomsel, Indonesia's largest mobile operator, has selected Leo Burnett and MEC as its creative and media agencies, respectively.

The two will now partner the telco for its strategic marketing activities in the country following a multi-stage pitch that was first called in January.

Managed by R3, the review saw a total of 16 creative agencies and nine media agencies participate. In the final selection stage, Leo Burnett edged out Colman Handoko and McCann Erickson. MEC was picked over Mediavest, ZenithOptimedia and incumbent Initiative.

Nirwan Lesmana, general manager of marketing communications at Telkomsel, said that he was looking to build long-term relationships with the appointed agencies that “fulfil our current and future objectives with the tight competitive market in mind”.

Steve Bonnell, technical advisor of Leo Burnett Indonesia, said: “The potential to use our creativity to change this category and help Indonesians make sense of their increasingly complex relationship with their mobile phones is exciting.”
