By David Johnson BANGKOK Thailand's Trade and Exhibition Association (TEA) has applauded the government's decision to enlist the exhibition industry as a key player in the country's economic roadmap. In a speech to the TEA on "Strategies Toward Sustainable Competitiveness", Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board deputy secretary-general, Ms Wilaiporn Liwgasemsan, outlined the industry's future. As part of the "Thailand: Vision 2020" mission paper, seven development aims have been outlined, and one, dedicated to becoming a leader in specific markets, includes becoming the regional centre for convention and exhibition business. The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is expected to facilitate government support. TEA president Mr Charnchai Svangsopakul said the government's creation of the TCEB in May was the most important step in the exhibition industry's history. "In the past, we didn't have much support from the Thai government, but it now realises the exhibition and convention industry can play a significant role," Mr Charnchai said, who is also a TCEB board member.
