Talbot to take CMX helm as Beck steps down

SHANGHAI Phil Talbot, chairman of Publicis Group Media in China and the China Media Exchange (CMX) will assume the CMX helm from outgoing CEO Philip Beck.

One of several senior management changes in the operation, Talbot will take over Beck’s day-to-day responsibilities, in conjunction with newly-appointed chief operating officer Karl Wu, who will also oversee operations and service delivery.

Wu was previously GM for NBA China, and prior to his leading role at the sports association was MD at Equinox, a Zenith planning agency. Beck’s departure also sees Warren Hui promoted to MD, CMX TV, print and radio negotiations.

The appointments follow the hire of Quinn Taw earlier this year, who heads the network’s digital business along with mergers and acquisitions. He joined the network from GroupM in March this year (Media, 7 March).

“I felt that it was best for the business to step aside so that we can have people speaking the language to run the business,” said Beck.

“That’s why we’ve really gone ahead and brought in senior talent that had the skill sets to take the business onto the next level.

“Karl has a history of good client relationship skills, he’s good with new business and has the necessary local market insights.”

Beck confirmed that he would be looking to return to the industry after a stint at the Beijing Normal University, but declined to confirm further details.
