Taiwan telecom firm hands $5m account to JWT

TAIPEI: J. Walter Thompson has landed the US$5.25 million advertising account for Sparq, the fixed line telephone services of New Century InfoCom Technology (NCIT), following a three-way contest with Saatchi & Saatchi and D'Arcy.

The incumbent agency Ogilvy & Mather Taiwan did not participate.

T.J. Wang, client service director of JWT said it was a combined strategic and creative pitch.

"Sparq set out three requirements for the advertising - awareness, recognition and differentiation, said Wang. "Simply put, it was who is Sparq? What does it do? And what makes it unique? Our presentation covered all of these bases."

JWT's stewardship of Sparq's advertising begins on July 1, and runs for 18 months through to the end of 2003.

NCIT was one of three private fixed-line networks - including Eastern Broadband Telecom and Taiwan Fixed Network - to be licensed early last year in anticipation of the opening of the market.

Together, these providers command a 10 to 15 per cent market share, which is still dominated by government-owned Chunghwa Telecom.

O&M Taiwan was NCIT's advertising agency, and had handled Sparq for more than a year. Ogilvy One is negotiating for Sparq's interactive work.
