Taiwan merger adds to WPP's media leverage

TAIPEI: Maximize and Media Plus have merged their operations in Taiwan in a move which industry observers described as an attempt by the WPP Group to increase its buying clout in the market.

The newly-merged company Maximize Media Plus is headed by managing director Shirley Liu, who declined to comment on the merger.

Industry observers have been less reticent. "Separately, neither are significant in Taiwan because they have billings under NT$1 billion (US$29.4 million). Combined, they will be in the top five, said the director of a rival media shop. But, the merger appears to be getting off on a wrong foot with key client Chinese Automobile threatening to leave following the resignations of 10 Media Plus staff, including former general manager C. Y. Chu. It is believed the walkout was prompted by a change in job titles.
