Survey reveals Thai cancellations

BANGKOK Five thousand hotel room nights were cancelled in the wake of the deadly New Year's Eve bombings in Bangkok, a survey has found.

However the survey of 14 major hotels by the Thailand Incentive and Convention Association two weeks after the attacks also found that key exhibition centres, BITEC, IMPACT and Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre reported no fallout. Roger Haumueller, Asian Trails managing director, expected the impact to be short-lived. "We had one cancellation, an IT company from Singapore of 100 participants to Pattaya," he said. A quick reaction by the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) to communicate the facts to international planners softened the impact as mass cancellations and postponements were feared. Destination Asia (Thailand) managing director Pornthip Samerton said most clients understood the incident was political and had nothing to do with external terrorism.
