Starbucks reins in cost by inking co-location deal

SYDNEY: Notorious for having an almost non-existent advertising budget, Starbucks Australia has teamed up with a partner from one of the most loathed industries - banks.

The coffee chain, which hit Australian shores in July 2000, has opened an outlet in the Commonwealth Bank Australia's (CBA) Circular Quay branch in Sydney, giving it a prime location in the area as well as a captive pool of bank customers as they wait in line.

Ian McKenzie, marketing manager of Starbucks Australia, said: "The co-locations offer exposure of our brand to customers that we might not otherwise be reaching through the Commonwealth Bank or Borders (the bookstore where it also has outlets).

McKenzie said the banking strategy was unique.

"Having said that, Starbucks in the United States has a bank co-location with Wells Fargo (a US-based bank). So it's not that unusual for us."
