Star Thai director Suthon sets up Mum Films

BANGKOK - Suthon Petchsuwan, one of Asia's most-awarded directors, has set up his own commercial production company, Mum Films.

Suthon, who made his name with ads for Oishi Green Tea and Soken DVD players, has teamed up with producer Surasak Vongthai. The duo have already shot commercials for Disneyland in Hong Kong and MobileOne in Singapore and will soon release a spot for a US-based advertiser. Mum’s Thailand-based reel contains work for Egco, PTT and Bridgestone.

Formerly a director at Bangkok’s Matching Studio, more recent work saw Suthon collaborate with Publicis Thailand ECD Kitti Chaiyaporn to create ‘Shakespearean Gecko’ for Shera Ceiling Boards, which was awarded at Cannes and D&AD.

Suthon began his career in advertising as a copywriter at Kenyon Co in 1983.

In 1987, he took on the creative directorship at Lintas Bangkok before becoming a director in 1993.

Once the world’s most heavily-awarded director, Suthon is now ranked second in Thailand behind Thanonchai Sornsrivichai, who was named the world’s most-awarded director for the third year in a row by this year’s Gunn Report. Suthon now ranks 24th in the table.
