Star moves into US, expands Asian F1 rights

HONG KONG - Satellite entertainment company Star has moved into the US cable market with the launch of three popular Indian general entertainment channels on Cox Communications, the country's third largest cable provider.

The deal between the NewsCorp subsidiary and North Virginia-based Cox will provide South Asian viewers in the region with access to India’s leading general entertainment channel Star India Plus, as well as Hindi entertainment channel Star One and Bollywood movie channel Star India Gold.

The channels will be available on a monthly subscription basis. Northern Virginia has one of the largest South Asian populations in the US.

Separately, ESPN Star Sports (ESS) has renewed its contract with Formula One Management to operate in partnership for a further five years, gaining exclusive broadcasting rights to the FIA Formula One World Championship in 24 markets across Asia.

Under the new agreement, ESS will broadcast the event across multiple platforms including TV, online, radio and mobile. The deal includes key markets such as India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.
