Standard Chartered doubles sponsorship of Singapore Marathon

SINGAPORE - Standard Chartered Bank has doubled its sponsorship of the annual Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon to S$2 million (US$1.4 million) as the race bids to become a global event.

The bank’s sponsorship marks the seventh consecutive year it has fronted the event, which is the largest of its kind in Singapore, both in terms of sponsorship and participation.

Lim Cheng Teck, Standard Chartered Bank Singapore’s chief executive, said: “Next year, Standard Chartered celebrates 150 years in Singapore and what better way to mark this important milestone and reiterate our commitment to the community than by reinforcing our support for Singapore’s most popular running event.”

The competition has grown from 6,000 runners in 2002 to over 40,000 participants in 2007 and will boast a prize purse of $270,000 this year, to further attract international competitors.
