S'pore slowdown forces closure of female title Flirt

SINGAPORE: Monthly women's magazine Flirt, which relaunched in July 2000 aiming for an older audience, has closed, falling victim to the downturn and fierce competition in the magazine sector.

The Times Periodicals' title published its last issue on April 2. Previously called Go, it had a strong readership among teenage girls, but Flirt was relaunched to reach the 20 to 29-year-old working women. This put it in direct competition against ACP Asia's Cleo and a raft of other titles.

The general consensus among media buyers was that Flirt's demise was indicative of an over-saturated sector undergoing consolidation.

"I think it's over-saturated and the market isn't ready to embrace so many titles,

said Elaine Quek, CIA client services director.

Singapore readers are also reluctant to switch titles and "another factor is you can get loads of foreign titles in Singapore so local magazines find it hard to survive".
