SPIKES: The jury talks to Media

SINGAPORE - The quality of entries at Spikes Asia have impressed the jury after two days of judging, with most expressing surprise at the number of countries that have submitted good work.

The categories that are currently being judged at Spikes Asia include Digital, Direct and Promo and Traditional.

David Droga, the founder and creative chairman of Droga5 and Spikes jury president, said that this year a larger number of countries had produced interesting work. “Last year it was only one or two countries who had something interesting”, he said.

Asked to comment on the overall standard of entries, Droga said: “It's still early days. We have only two days of looking at entries. You are hesitant and less optimistic and then your optimism starts to grow more and more as you come close to the shortlist. It's very exciting.”

Prasoon Joshi, executive chairman of McCann Erickson and Spikes Asia jury member for the Traditional category said he has seen some some "gems" but not everything he has seen is “great”.

“As it happens in the first round you get to see everything and the second round is when you start selecting the gems. I am looking forward to the shortlist.”

Another Traditional jury member Calvin Soh, the vice-chairman and chief creative officer of Publicis Asia, said there was a good variety of work coming out of Asia. “One of the interesting things for me has been the work coming out from Korea. It's one of the biggest ad markets and powerhouse of talent. Otherwise the usual suspects of Thailand and Japan have come up with good work. China seems to be coming on the fore”.

The jury members on the Digital, Direct and Promo category were also enthusiastic by the work they have seen so far. Morihiko Hasebe, senior creative director at Hakuhodo Japan, said: "There is some great work. We have seen some fascinating ways used to capture people’s lives, some are based on great technology and some on great ideas. So regardless of budget and technology, when there is a great idea it moves peoples mind.”

Dirk Eschenbacher, executive creative director, director and managing partner, Tribal DDB Worldwide Hong Kong said that he was most impressed with work from Japan, but there were also some other countries that surprised him. “Definitely Japan is up there in terms of ideas and technology but I have seen some good work from India, Malaysia and the Philippines, which has really surprised me."
