SPH adds travel to AsiaOne offer

Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) has unveiled a raft of enhancements to its AsiaOne news and lifestyle portal, aimed at better targeting niche consumers.

The company has launched a dedicated travel microsite, enabling users to access travel news and reviews, and check flight schedules. In addition, AsiaOne is also beefing up its general news content, offering consumers vodcasts -- downloadable video news clips -- alongside its podcast service. According to SPH internet business unit senior manager Raymond Teoh, the new travel microsite is the latest attempt to segment the AsiaOne audience, following existing sites for motoring, investor relations, human resources and information technology. "Our various special interest sites serve different niches and advertisers can select their preferred audiences to deliver sharper online campaigns," said Teoh. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a digital media agency executive praised the enhancements, but questioned whether AsiaOne had the necessary usage muscle to make the new offerings relevant. "These sites are definitely integral to our business, but I wonder whether AsiaOne has the critical mass of users," said the source. Unlike its Straits Times Interactive site, the new travel microsite offers free content. Similarly, the agency executive supported the rollout of vodcasts, but cautioned that Singapore clients are still learning about these new formats. "It's still a very new and young model in this market."
