Southeast Asia: Thai Government purchase interest benefits Liverpool

BANGKOK: Media frenzy about the Thai Governement's bid to acquire a 30 per cent stake in the Liverpool football club has spurred sales of merchandise bearing the English Premier League marque to record the highest growth rate in five years.

According to sources, Vaksorn Promotion, a subsidiary of Siam Sports Syndicate Plc which operates a chain of Star Soccer stores selling imported soccer souvenirs, reported a jump of 20 per cent sales over the last two weeks.

The best selling Liverpool merchandise includes T-shirts, scarves, portrait miniatures, balls, glasses, VCD and DVD highlights of each match. If the Thai Government seals the acquisition deal, the merchandise importers will no longer have to deal with the club's officials in the UK.

The five Star Soccer stores located all around Bangkok sell about 20 items from various football clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus, in addition to Liverpool. The products are priced from 99 baht to 3,200 baht. The marketers of competitive brands view the possible entry of a Liverpool store chain as a boon, rather than a threat. Said a source, "There is still room in Thailand to launch sports goods, particularly of English soccer teams. More players will mean market expansion."
