Sony playing catch-up in emerging markets

Sony Ericsson posted a 33 per cent year-on-year growth in Q2 - taking LG's place as the world's fourth largest mobile handset maker - thanks largely due to the sale of mid- to high-end Walkman phones.

To ensure continuous growth, however, Sony Ericsson needs to make a a bigger play in emerging markets — Nokia and Motorola's latest battlefield.

Sony Ericsson has dipped its toes in this arena before, launching GSM models in China which have gained a marginal following. It is now hedging on India, having recently set up its first local R&D centre in Bangalore.
In such markets, Sony Ericsson is more than a decade behind Nokia and years behind an aggressive Motorola. Can the handset maker ensure that it does not fall flat in the face of the two giants?
