SingTel plots portal launch to rival Yahoo!

SINGAPORE - SingTel, Singapore's largest telco, is planning to take on Yahoo and Singapore Press Holdings in the city state's crowded online media market with the launch of an information portal.

The site will be targeted at all ages of Singaporeans with locals news, music and travel content, and will be positioned as an information source for the mobile phone as well as the computer.

A name has yet to decided on for the project, however the SingTel brand is not expected to feature on the site, say sources.

The platform will be free to access, and will use a revenue model based on display and classified advertising, targeting mostly small- to-medium sized companies. It is also expected to feature a search facility.

SingTel declined to comment on the launch.
