SingTel clinches broadcast deal with top US studios

SINGAPORE - SingTel has clinched the broadcast rights to three US studios - Disney-ABC, Twentieth Century Fox and Warner Bros - as the media company looks to out muscle StarHub in the battle for pay-TV audiences in Singapore.

SingTel's mio TV platform will screen more than 50 drama series from the US studios via its ‘season pass’ in September, making available series such as Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Ugly Betty and Prison Break. The shows will be screened within a day of the broadcast or premiere in the US.

“Consumers are getting increasingly demanding," said Allen Lew, CEO of SingTel. "They want to get the latest TV hits ahead of anyone else and mio TV is filling this gap with Season Pass. We see this as the next big wave of content consumption in Singapore."

Lew added that he was “optimistic” of the pick-up rate from consumers and hopes the new service will boost its current pay-TV subscriber base of just 45,000 members.

SingTel launched mio TV in July 2007 to challenge Starhub’s hold on the local pay-TV industry. Starhub currently has 508,000 subscribers.
