Singapore welcomes three medical congresses and over 7,000 delegates

SINGAPORE Three big medical congresses saw more than 7,000 delegates converge upon Singapore during July. All three events took place at Suntec Singapore.

The 27th International Epilepsy Congress from July 8 to 12 drew 3,000 medical practitioners. An exhibition ran concurrently with the congress.

The 2nd World Glaucoma Congress attracted 1,975 participants, with almost half from Asia and one third from Europe, between July 18 and 21.

Bas Schot, project manager of Eurocongres International, the professional conference organiser, said: "With its international experience, Eurocongres was impressed with the professional way the logistics were handled."

Perhaps the greatest coup was the 18th Wonca World Conference from July 24 to 27 with 2,420 delegates, which was the biggest conference of general practitioners to ever be held in Singapore.

Chairman of the host organising committee, Dr Tan See Leng, said: "Our driving force was to put Singapore on the world map for family medicine."

"We hoped to promote the medical scene in Singapore, not only to the region but also internationally and to showcase our strengths, expertise and experience while leveraging on the vast networks of Wonca members and other international participating colleges and institutions."

Aloysius Arlando, assistant chief executive, business travel and MICE Group, Singapore Tourism Board, said: "The high concentration of business events in July reaffirms Singapore’s position as a premier destination for high-level intellectual exchange and networking opportunities among medical and biomedical scientific communities."
