Singapore seeks to aid depressed with outdoor ads

The city's Health Promotion Board (HPB) has erected 'Depression Poles' at two locations, as part of an educational campaign to dispel the stigma associated with the disease.

Running in conjunction with a major outdoor drive on Clear Channel bus shelters, the two poles feature colourful Post-it notes with 'help messages'. "The 'depression pole', with its colourful and detachable mental wellness helpline numbers, is a creative and unique media to provide carers and the depressed with an accessible channel where they can seek more information on mental health." said HPB head of marketing Johnson Seah. The 'Mind your mind' campaign aims to encourage early treatment of depression, and also includes collaterals and public talks and forums, along with mass media and online. The programme targets the general public and is the latest stage in a 10-year plan that began in 2001.
