Shoppers wooed by promise of 'personal touch' in HK

The city's newest lifestyle store, Kou, has been designed as a two-storey mansion where everything in the penthouse 'home' is for sale.

Created by interior stylist and owner Louise Kou, the boutique is located in Hong Kong's Central district and has been developed to make visitors feel like guests rather than shoppers. It spans 5,000 square feet, and offers contemporary home ideas for décor and personal style.

"The idea was to create a homely environment and a shopping experience that would represent a house. Visitors can touch, feel, smell and see how everything is placed. If they like it, they can buy the entire living room set," said Kou, who helped accessorise the Philippe Starck-designed Jia Hotel in Hong Kong.

The boutique's open-floor plan at the entrance level houses the lounge, dining and kitchen areas, as well as an outdoor patio. Designed in aubergine and silver, the living room showcases European artwork and antique furniture.

In the library, shelves are packed with books for sale. In the bedroom, guests are encouraged to peek into lingerie drawers and wardrobes where linen and towels, as well as the antique bed, are for sale.

"When people walk into the bathroom, they see spa and bath products. I think seeing these items in a home environment is more of an encouragement for them to take them home," added Kou.

Kou is targeting a mid- to high-end clientele. "I hope guests will come here and have a glass of wine, men can have cigars on the patio and see it as a relaxed shopping environment. They can buy the wine by case, or coffee.

"For a more personal touch, I entertain and receive all the customers. It's really a breakthrough in retail design and is about moving away from big stores where there are sales assistants everywhere and there is no longer a personal touch to build loyalty."

Kou has tied up with American Express and the Kee Club for exclusive member benefits and promotions.

Stores in Shanghai, Beijing and Southeast Asia are also in the pipeline.
