SCMP stands by decision to sack journalists

HONG KONG - Leading English-language daily the South China Morning Post has confirmed editor-in-chief Mark Clifford will stand by his decision to sack two journalists, despite a petition of no-confidence in his tenure signed by more than 80 staff and delivered to SCMP chairman, Ian Kuok.

According to media reports, the pair were sacked for their part in a 'spoof farewell page', a tradition for leaving journalists among press titles globally, because of language used in part of the page.

SCMP assistant marketing director Irene Ho said the two staff members "had breached work ethic guidelines", although she declined to elaborate on which section specifically had been breached.

"The editor-in-chief has made a very careful decision, and we will be sticking to that position," she said.

Media understands Clifford (pictured) intends to raise the petition issue at a regular meeting with department heads today.
