SCMP.com leaps into podcasting in link with Apple

SCMP.com, the internet edition of Hong Kong's leading English-language newspaper, South China Morning Post (SCMP), has taken the next step into the digital age, linking with Apple to provide dedicated podcasting content to a wider audience.

Podcasting is the transfer of audio files to computers and MP3 players from the internet, and has an advantage in providing news and other content to more active platforms. Whereas previously users were only able to access the paper's content through SCMP.com, the information will now be made available to those with Apple's iTunes product.

"Globally, there is a trend for newsprint to be declining, and I think all newspaper publishers around the world are thinking about how to get their brand of information to the wider audience," said Michael Logan, SCMP Technology Post editor. "(Podcasting) allows us to go into much more depth with our content."

Logan said the number of spaces in which media companies operated in was increasing, but he added the internet was fast becoming the distribution point of choice from among the different media. SCMP director of marketing and communications Amanda Turnbull said it was crucial media companies moved with the times. "It's not a passive experience any more," she said. "You have to engage with the audience any way you can."
