CNN will launch a South Asia channel, featuring specific regional
programming for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other South Asian
countries during primetime hours.
"The launch of the South Asia channel is the next step in CNN
International's ongoing regionalisation strategy and demonstrates our
long-term commitment to the increasingly important South Asia region,"
said Ms Rena Golden, senior VP of CNNI.
The South Asia channel will offer regional news on the hour and CNN's
world news every half hour, plus special feature programmes.
Mr Riz Khan will feature as a prominent presenter on the new
channel.
Business news programme Biz Asia will air in primetime and more regular
business updates will be introduced from CNN's correspondent in
Mumbai.
"The Indian sub-continent is an important market for CNN and this new
service will be an attractive offering for both viewers and cable
operators," said Mr Anshuman Misra, managing director of Turner
International India.
"By time shifting our programme schedule, the South Asia service will
allow CNN's most popular programmes to reach viewers in the region
during their prime viewing hours."
CNN doubled its Asia production programmes last year, increasing its
Asian programming roster from 14 to 30 hours of regionally-focused shows
per week.
