SAR's property spend soars on new optimism

HONG KONG: The local property sector has overtaken its mainland property counterpart to become the biggest-spending category.

According to ACNielsen, the sector's adspend in the first quarter totalled HK$383 million (US$49 million), up 85 per cent year-on-year.

In contrast, the mainland property sector slumped 13 per cent to $301 million.

MindShare Hong Kong managing director, K.K. Tsang, said: "Local property developers are optimistic of a market rebound this year. This optimism is continuing and we can see heavy spending in April."

Overall, ACNielsen pegged advertising expenditure in the first three months at $7.3 billion (US$938 million), eight per cent higher than in the same period last year.

But given the continued discounting by media owners, the figure isn't likely to be as high as that, Tsang said.
