Samsung launches networking website

SINGAPORE - Samsung has developed an ad-funded social networking site for mobile phones and computers.

Called Überme, the unbranded site allows users to create their own web page equipped with a blog and space to share videos, music and photos. Although the site is optimised for Samsung phones, David Henry, GM of corporate marketing for Samsung Southeast Asia/Oceania, said that any mobile carrier can access the site as well.

Samsung will also use the platform to contact its users and launch marketing campaigns. The site recently launched a popularity contest called ‘ÜberHot’, whereby members select the ‘hottest’ Überme individuals to win prizes worth US$50,000. The website was designed in-house. “When you’re successful at selling the products, that’s when you start moving the brand to the next stage, which is to become a premium brand with which people feel a bond,”  said Henry.

Überme rolls out in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Indonesia, India and the Philippines, with the possibility of language-localisation in the near future.
