Samsung hands PR to Shandwick Australia

ASIA-PACIFIC - Samsung has handed its entire consumer electronics account to Weber Shandwick following a competitive pitch.

Lisa Popplewell, vice president of technology at Weber Shandwick, described the appointment as a “very exciting opportunity” and explained that Weber Shandwick would work across Samsung’s product range and on its sports sponsorship, which includes deals within rugby league and rugby union, and the Olympic torch relay, due to pass through Sydney later this month.

Work on the torch relay would begin immediately, Popplewell said.

Seperately, Weber Shandwick China has bolstered its healthcare and technology teams with a raft of new appointments.

For healthcare, the agency has hired Nicholas Chew as account manager in Shanghai, and Xu Jian as a consultant in Beijing.

Chew returns to the agency after two-year stint at Hill & Knowlton. Jian, who will join sister agency Powell Tate, arrives from the Chinese Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, three new hires have been made for the technology practice in Beijing. Judy Guo, Wendy Wang and Danielle Yuan arrive as account manager, consultant and account coordinator, respectively.

Guo and Yuan both join from Text 100, while Wang was previously a US-based journalist. The new hires follow the relocation of regional technology VP Scott Sykes from Hong Kong to Beijing last year.
